Jacob C. Ong is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to the Utah Bar and the Federal Bar. He has extensive experience in the prosecution of utility patents in the fields of software, educational tech, electronic, biotech, and consumer product technology, as well as design patents. He also has assisted in litigating important cases for clients in the areas of patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. He has extensive licensing experience and has counseled clients in the areas of IP portfolio management, due diligence for IP mergers and asset acquisitions, as well as Internet law.
Mr. Ong attended Brigham Young University as a Howard W. Hunter Scholar and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with Honors. As a Gates Millennium Scholar, he completed an M.S. in neurosciences as well as graduate-level research as a doctoral student in Neurosciences in the Graduate Program of Neurosciences in the School of Medicine at UC San Diego, co-authoring two peer-reviewed journal articles in the field of behavioral pharmacology. As a law student at BYU Law School, he served as a Managing Editor of Submissions for the BYU International Law & Management Review Editorial Board and as a fellow for the International Center for Law and Religion in Hong Kong. After law school, he worked for an international intellectual property law firm and as an extern for U.S. District Judges Dale Kimball and Clark Waddoups. He practiced as corporate counsel at an international library software company and general counsel at Parlant Technology Inc., where he oversaw exponential growth of its patent portfolio and managed successful patent ligation and trademark litigation. After assisting Parlant Technology with an industry-changing merger, he managed the legal affairs for a private equity firm. He has entered his second decade as the managing attorney for Ongs Law Firm PLLC, a firm specializing in intellectual property matters, and as an Of Counsel attorney for Anderson, Fife & Marshall, he strives to help each client leverage their intellectual property and other assets into business success.
In 2014, Jacob was the President of the Corporate Counsel Section of the Utah Bar Association and is a founding board member of the Silicon Slopes General Counsel Roundtable. He is also the founding chair for the Taiwan Chapter of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society. Jacob has taught science at all levels, from graduate students to elementary students. For a decade, Jacob and his wife Brenda coached their four children in FIRST Lego League or First Tech Challenge. Recently, he was the founding coach for the American Heritage HS Mock Trial team. He also enjoys interpreting and translating Mandarin Chinese works and spending time with his family, including serving others through his favorite church, playing basketball, singing bass in choirs, and acting in the roles of ancient and modern characters.
